Psychiatric healthcare design challenges

A psychiatric unit is one of the most difficult space types to which one can attempt to apply thoughtful design

A psychiatric unit is one of the most difficult space types to which one can attempt to apply thoughtful design, according to an article on the Contract website.

Designers must work to minimize potential risks to the patient. Early planning for these specific details will allow the design team to integrate safety requirements into the design concept from the beginning, the article said.

Key questions include:

• Is there a non-institutional product that can serve the purpose if it is adjusted?

• Who can I talk to about manufacturing a better product?

According to the article, as more new psychiatric units replace old ones, excellent examples of a dedication to these considerations are emerging.
