Rare E. coli found in Los Angeles County patient

Incident marks a first for California

A Los Angeles county resident was infected with a rare, drug-resistent E. coli bacteria, according to an article on the LA. Daily News website.

The incident marks a first for California and local public health officials issued an advisory.

“The appearance of mcr-1 in Los Angeles serves as a reminder of the importance of infection control measures and antibiotic stewardship,” a public health official said in an alert.

Last month, the health department mandated that CRE be reported by all acute care hospitals and skilled nursing facilities in Los Angeles County.
