Robots Deployed To Deliver Hospital Medications

Meds-to-beds program includes secure, autonomous robotic delivery of prescribed medications

Technology advances are reinventing a range of operations and processes in and around institutional and commercial facilities, from drones that deliver supplies and materials for hospitals to autonomous mowers that rove campus landscapes. Now advanced robotic technology is being applied to the delivery of medications in hospitals.

Swisslog Healthcare, a global supplier of integrated solutions for medication management in healthcare facilities, has launched a partnership with Summa Health to execute a pilot medication adherence program on the healthcare organization’s Akron campus in an effort to meet the increasing demand for discharge medication delivery at the patient bedside, according to Healthcare Construction & Operations.

The new meds-to-beds program includes secure, autonomous robotic delivery of prescribed medication and concierge-style medication reconciliation and consulting services conducted at the bedside in preparation for patient discharge.

To create the pilot offering, Swisslog Healthcare combines Delivery Manager, the company’s intelligent chain-of-custody software deployed in automated transport scenarios, with robotic technology from Savioke and telepharmacy services from PipelineRx. Among the benefits are higher degrees of patient safety related to medication use, increasing medication adherence to maximize therapy benefits, and minimizing 30-day hospital readmissions.
