Security increased at fertility center after freezer malfunction

Officer wearing a bullet-proof vest stationed at the main entrance front desk

Security at the Ahuja Medical Center in Beachwood, Ohio, has increased after 700 patients were notified that the frozen eggs and embyros they stored at the Fertility Center may have been damaged when the temperature rose in a storage tank, according to an article on the Cleveland Plain Dealer website.

Patients at the Fertility Center found a police car at the parking lot's entrance as well as an officer wearing a bullet-proof vest at the main entrance front desk.

The hospital said the additional security at all Ahuja hospital entrances is "for the safety of our patients and staff." There have been no threats, according to hospital officials.

About 2,000 eggs and embryos stored in a large liquid nitrogen freezer at the facility were affected. The storage tank had off-site monitoring and an audible alarm that would alert staff to a temperature change. The alarm was sounding on Sunday morning when staff arrived but there was no one in the facility overnight on Saturday.
