The microbial concentration influences surgical site infection rates


The microbial concentration in an operating room (OR) influences surgical site infection rates, according to an article on the Infection Control Today website.

A recent study assessed microbial colony counts in working ORs and to determine the factors affecting air contamination.

The study found the microbial concentration of an indoor OR influences surgical site infection rates. 

The number of staff and their activities affects the microbe concentration in the air of the OR. The study's results suggested that ORs doing complex surgeries with more surgical personnel should increase the frequency of air exchanges.
