Tailored veterans home infection control cuts MRSA

Program led to a 64 percent reduction during first year


An infection control program tailored to veterans in a community living center reduced the rate of MRSA infections 89 percent over four years, according to an article on the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy.

MRSA prevalence at the W.G. (Bill) Hefner VA Medical Center's Community Living Center (CLC) in Salisbury, N.C., had reached 70 percent by 2012.

In 2013, Veterans Health Administration infection preventionists began a program of surveillance, screening and decolonization that led to a 64 percent reduction during first year.

To address surface contamination, environmental services used ultraviolet C light to conduct daily terminal cleaning of empty rooms, bathrooms and common areas.
