A patient is in stable condition after falling six stories at UVM Medical Center.

According to VTDigger, hospital officials said the patient opened and exited a window in a stairwell on the sixth floor, suffering multiple injuries. The patient was stabilized in the emergency department and is receiving ongoing treatment. No further details about the patient’s condition have been released at this time of reporting.

The stairwell is accessible to patients, but mostly used by hospital staff, VTDigger reports. As the windows are older, they can be manually opened by anyone in the hospital. The UVM Medical Center called city police when the fall first occurred and is having its own separate investigation into the matter.

“This was an extremely distressing situation for everyone involved,” Stephen Leffler, COO of UVM Medical Center said in a statement. “I am grateful for the teams who provided lifesaving care, and also want to thank the teams who continue to care for this patient.”
