Urgent care centers provide easy access, cost control

Massachusetts health system opening its second site in September and is planning two more in the region

The use of urgent care centers to deliver non-emergency health care without the need for appointments has worked so well for Southcoast Hospitals Group in Massachusetts, the organization is opening its second site in September and is looking to build two more centers in the region, according to an article on the Southcoast Today website.

Southcoast's new Wareham facility, located in a retail plaza, will provide medical care without an appointment. It will be staffed with four professionals daily with some variation of physicians, allied health professionals and registered nurses.

The Wareham design includes some improvements from the first facility. One of the lessons learned was the need for more examination rooms and the addition of a triage room, the article said.

Southcoast's Rosebrook medical building, less than a mile away, has a staff of physicians and specialists and medical imaging equipment that can be accessed when needed.
