Utah bill to allow security cameras for nursing home residents advances

Legislation would allow residents of assisted living centers to place a recording device in their room

Legislation that would allow residents of assisted living centers to place a recording device in their room was debated by the Utah State House Health and Human Services Committee, according to an article on the Utah Political Capitol website.

The bill would allow an assisted living facility resident – or their representative – to install a video or audio monitoring device in the resident’s room.

Under the bill, assisted living facilities will be prohibited from denying an individual admission to the facility or discharging a resident from the facility solely because of their wish to install such equipment.

Jared Nye, president of the Utah Assisted Living Association, expressed his “strong opposition” to the bill due to concerns over privacy and security.
