Video: Adaptive reuse in healthcare

Architect posts a talk on dealing with 'retailization' of outpatient care

Adrian Haggerty, Array Architects' National Capital Region Vice President, posted a video on Array's site about adaptive reuse of outpatient care properties.

According to Haggerty, there are a variety of factors informing a healthcare system's decision to expand its outpatient service offering.

Increasingly, an effective expansion strategy involves embedding new healthcare services within well-established centers of development — often involving development within existing facilities.

Under these circumstances, the first consideration should be whether an existing building can suit the intended use. When executed with appropriate due diligence, the adaptive reuse strategy can get the expanded services to market quicker than new construction, as long as other important factors such as access, adjacencies and infrastructure are considered.
