Virginia Mason's downgraded accreditation triggers probe

Joint Commission's decision to downgrade Virginia Mason Medical Center's accreditation prompts a dual state and federal investigation

The Joint Commission's decision to downgrade Virginia Mason Medical Center's accreditation because of safety issues prompts a dual state and federal investigation, according to an article on the Seattle Business Journal website.

Virginia Mason has already taken corrective action to fix the issues raised, but the Washington State Department of Health says "there is an ongoing investigation, based in part on the Joint Commission's findings."

The Joint Commission conducted two surprise reviews of Virginia Mason, which took place May 20 and May 27.

The agency found the hospital was out of compliance with quality and safety standards in 29 areas, including a situation that "posed a threat to patients or other individuals served," according to an agency document.
