What is Elizabethkingia, the rare bacterial infection spreading in Wisconsin?

It is believed to be spread by a procedure, device or fluid in a healthcare setting


Since November, Wisconsin has seen 48 cases of Elizabethkingia, a rare and often antibiotic-resistant bacterial infection of the bloodstream that has killed at least 15 so far, according to an article on the Wisconsin Public Radio website.

Elizabethkingia is ubiquitous in the environment. But it doesn't attack the normal host

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently got involved to investigate why the bacteria is affecting Wisconsinites in particular.

According to the CDC, the immediate action needs to be on the side of healthcare providers and facilities to immediately detect, identify and report it.
