Whiteboards could help cut C-section rates

Communication may be the key

Better communication may be key to lower healthcare facilities' cesarean-section rates, according to an article on the Becker's Hospital Review website.

According to an op-ed for The New York Times. Many hospitals have tried to lower their C-section rates with only modest results.

Overlake Medical Center in Bellevue, Wash has installed a whiteboard in every labor and delivery room The care team writes down:

• Every team member's name

• Patient's birthing preferences

• Status of the patient, baby and labor process

• A time that the whole care team and patient will reconvene

Preliminary results show that using the board has decreased C-section rates.
