A ‘perfect storm’ superbug worrying infection experts

Candida auris resists usual control measures

Enhanced cleaning didn’t stop the dangerous Candida auris bug from spreading from one patient to the next in the U.K.'s Royal Brompton Hospital  hospital, according to an article on the STAT website.

Segregating infected patients didn't stop the spread either.

Eventually, the hospital temporarily shut its ICU. That appeared to have put a stop to the more than year-long outbreak that involved at least 50 patients. U.S. hospitals may be facing the same situation with C. auris.

“It’s almost a perfect storm kind of organism. It has all the bad characteristics of a large number of bad pathogens,” said Dr. Alex Kallen, a medical officer with the division of health care quality promotion at the CDC.
