Cybercriminals may be planning a new type of attack on healthcare

There is a possibility of direct manipulation of patient data


A “Perspective” op-ed article on The New England Journal of Medicine website discusses the possibility of data breaches involving protected health information, according to the Healthcare Informatics website. 

Could criminal hackers tamper with critical clinical information contained within electronic health records? 

“The potential for manipulation of clinical systems and clinical data constitutes an additional threat. The effect of such threats on medical devices has been well described," the article said.

“Manipulation of patient data could be even more damaging. Unsuspecting healthcare providers could react to the falsified (information), providing treatment that could harm the patient."
