The first step in ensuring a healthcare facility is prepared for severe weather is to get an understanding of your assets, vulnerabilities, as well as community vulnerabilities and their emergency plans, according to an article on the Medxcel website.

About 98 percent of declared disasters are weather related, leading to approximately 500 deaths and $15 billion in damages annually.

A solid emergency preparedness strategy starts with planning. Thinking through the steps you would need to take and the resources you might need in the event a disaster occurs will put you in a better position to manage and recover from an event, the article said. 

Developing processes and procedures, updating and maintaining the responses plan, training and practicing and communication are also crucial.
