In a recent Q&A on the FacilityCare website, consultant Brad Keyes answered a question about the effective date of the new 2012 Life Safety Code.

Q: Our policy for construction barriers allows the use of fire-rated poly only on short-term jobs, which we will probably continue to use even after 2012 Life Safety Code (LSC) is adopted. My question for you is when the 2012 LSC is adopted, doesn’t it still take 16 months or so to become effective?

A: The effective date when the new 2012 LSC becomes the “law of the land” is entirely up to Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). There is no set requirement that CMS have a 12- or 16-month effective date after it finally adopts the 2012 LSC.
