Award-winning author and patient education evangelist Fran London featured at TigrCon 2016

“Technology and personalized attention produces ‘magical’ results that empower caregivers to engage and educate patients to improve outcomes,” says award-winning author and nurse Fran London. She will deliver the keynote presentation at TeleHealth Services’TigrCon 2016 user conference.

London will present, “The Everyday Magic of Tech and Touch in Patient Education and Engagement,” at the conference in New Orleans, Nov. 16-18. The user conference is hosted by TeleHealth Services, the nation’s leading provider of hospital television systems and interactive patient education and engagement solutions.

A community of clinicians, patient educators and hospital executives will gather to share best practices and new strategies to improve the patient experience. A focus on clinical challenges will include accreditation, reimbursements, readmissions, revenue generation and health care efficiencies.

“The evidence in the field of patient education has been very consistent,” London said. “The most effective and efficient teaching methods involve the learner in the process and individualize teaching to the needs of the learner. The best way to involve and individualize is to assess, then teach, evaluate understanding, and if necessary, re-teach in another way.”

TeleHealth’s Tigr interactive patient education and engagement system delivers condition-specific, video-based education throughout the recovery continuum. The Tigr system automates the assessment process with results sent immediately to nurses, who use the teach-back method with one-on-one discussions to further confirm comprehension.

London has published books and articles on patient education appearing in the American Journal of Nursing, Nursing Administration Quarterly, Pediatric Nursing, Journal for Nurses in Staff Development, and Home Healthcare Nurse. In 2010 her book, “No Time to Teach: The Essence of Patient and Family Education for Health Care Providers,” was recognized as Book of the Year by the American Journal of Nursing.

London was most recently the health education specialist at Phoenix Children’s Hospital and received the hospital’s Nursing Excellence Legacy Award last year. She earned a BA in Anthropology from Brooklyn College, and a BS in Nursing and MS in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing from the University of Rochester in New York. She has worked as a staff nurse in pediatrics and psychiatry, inpatient and outpatient, school nurse, and psychiatric consultation liaison nurse.
