Best practices for healthcare facilities in winter

Managers must recognize and mitigate building corrosion


Winter brings a fresh set of challenges to healthcare facilities managers, according to an article on the FaciltyCare website. 

Corrosion can be severely damaging, so it is necessary to recognize and mitigate it. Ways to identify the corrosion include: 

• See the rust.

• See the results in terms of streaking or staining 

• See the results of hidden rust. This is generally seen in concrete, where rebar has started to rust and has begun to push away the concrete. 

Properly painting is the ideal situation if rust is found, but when it is too cold, there are a few options to buy time.

There are many products on the market that will do an effective job of preventing rust. For instance, WD-40 is a viable alternative for cleaning a surface as long as all safety precautions are followed. After applying WD-40, applying Vaseline, mineral oil, olive/vegetable oil or grease are some of the "stop-gap"options.
