A number of Boston healthcare facilities are going green, according to a slide show on the Boston Business Journal website describing efforts at various facilities.
For instance, the Yawkey Ambulatory Care Center at Boston Medical Center has an innovative HVAC project that will save the hospital and the environment 4,631,895 kWh/year. The hospital is also in the midst of developing a combined heat and power plant, according to the article.
The Yawkey Center is LEED Certified Gold and was the first building in the area to incorporate green roofs, which are planted with native foliage to cool the building in the summer, improve air quality and reduce storm water runoff.
Yawkey also has low-flow plumbing, light dimming that adjusts to daylight, innovations in composting, recycling and waste reductions and upgrades to HVAC controls.
