Builder fined after dementia patient killed by falling door

Heavy fire door fell on patient during renovation work at Alexian Brothers Care Centre in UK

A builder was fined after a dementia patient was killed by a falling fire door, according to an article on The Bolton News website. The heavy fire door fell on a woman, 92, during renovation work at Alexian Brothers Care Centre in Moston, England.

The builder had been hired to convert a ground floor bedroom and en-suite into two toilets and a store room.

After a loud thud and a cry for help was heard, the staff found the woman on the floor inside the former ground floor bedroom with a fire door on top of her. According to the article, it took three people to lift the door off her and she suffered a broken hip. Her condition deteriorated in the hospital and she later died.

A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation found the healthcare firm and building company had both failed to make sure the room was locked at the end of each day and also when it was left unoccupied.
