Designing a new experience in healthcare

It used to be that the only “experience” one expected during a visit to a doctor’s office was the feeling of a cold stethoscope or the prick of a needle. But a changing marketplace that includes a wider choice of providers and more discriminating clientele means that healthcare facilities are now creating a different kind of experience for their patients.

“The Arcturis team works with healthcare clients to design innovative spaces that reinforce their brand, respond to patient tastes, and give them an innovative edge in an increasingly competitive environment,” said Lisa Chill, director in the design firm’s Dallas office.

Such is the case with the four recently-opened locations Arcturis designed for LuminCARE. These free-standing centers are a unique hybrid model of family medical and urgent care facilities that focus on making treatment convenient.

“The LuminCARE offices provide a new option for patients who may have previously gone to an ER. Our team worked with Dr. Douglas Won to create spaces that establish their identity as a comfortable, convenient place to receive care and help them achieve their business goals. The designs feel contemporary and luxurious with fresh colors and interesting artwork,” Chill said.

Arcturis was also responsible for helping Dr. Claude Stephens when he set out create a truly unique office in a vacant church for his First Family Orthodontics practice. The team oversaw the Midlothian building’s renovation and then worked with the doctor to integrate his impressive Midcentury modern furniture collection into the décor.

“Many of Dr. Stephens’ clients are children, so we allowed the playful side of his collected furniture to really shine while also keeping things sophisticated enough to appeal to adults,” said Chill.

Not to be outdone by their discriminating owners, pets are also enjoying a new kind of experience when heading to the vet.

Arcturis’s design for the Vetsavers Pet Hospital in Carollton, TX, was inspired by the client’s unique business model: communicate high quality and be as transparent as possible with pet’s healthcare. Vetsavers’ low pricing is displayed on a digital menu board so there are no surprises when it’s time to check out. Glass walls separating the reception and treatment areas allow pet owners to see that their beloved friends are being well cared for as they receive treatments such as vaccinations and checkups.

“Dr. Sue Mace, owner of Vetsavers, wanted a unique space that minimized anxiety for both pets and their owners. Being able to keep that visual connection throughout treatment and knowing up front what the costs are is a revolutionary new concept that has been extremely well received,” Chill said.
