Despite proactive pest control strategies, two healthcare facilities had to deal with bed bug issues this year. They shared their experiences in an article on the FacilityCare website.
Children’s Hospital of Georgia found bed bugs in two patient rooms and one waiting area. Chris Miller, director of facilities at Georgia Regents Health System, which includes the 154-bed children’s hospital, said that quickly validating the problem is an important first step.
"In many situations we find that the complaint of bedbugs is not really bedbugs. In many cases it’s a different insect,” he said.
Cox South Emergency and Trauma Center in Springfield, Missouri, had to close its waiting room after spotting bedbugs this summer.
Because the pests at Cox South were caused by visitors who brought infected personal items, the staff has not had to make changes to its response.
