Designers are now exploring more automated ways to combat bacteria through isolation units, technology applications, infection-reducing materials and greening spaces, according to an article on the Sourceable website.

The design elements of healthcare facilities dealing with Ebola have been recently in the headlines.

The Ebola Building Standard for the Construction of Healthcare Facilities in Developing Countries outlines the proposed design and construction of treatment and quarantine centers to standards which minimize the risk of Ebola to both staff and opportunity for patient recovery, the article said.

The latest draft includes the importance of temperature control to minimize perspiration, as healthcare workers wear protective suits that can cause a high level of perspiration.

Ventilation and surface materials and coatings are also listed as factors.
