Hospital studies ways to improving relaxation

Acute care orthopedic patients given meditation CDs or sound machines

The Sharp Coronado Hospital, Coronado, Calif., conducted a study exploring ways to improving relaxation for acute care orthopedic patients during hospitalization. 

Their relaxation program for patients provided lavender aromatherapy, massage and listening to relaxing music to provide a calming experience. To enhance this experience the use of meditation CDs and soothing sounds machines was studied for the ability to enrich the relaxing experience for patients.

According to The Beryl Instiitute, the research was to conducted to determine: 

• Patient preferences for meditation using CD 

players or a soothing sounds machine 

• Whether these preferences change based on gender or age

• Level of relaxation after using meditation CD player  as 

compared to level of relaxation when using sounds machine

This research was supported in part by The Beryl Institute’s Patient Experience Grant Program.
