Hospital system security will be allowed to make arrests on public property

Police working for University Hospitals Health System in Cleveland, Ohio, soon will be able to make misdemeanor arrests, enforce traffic laws and ticket illegally parked cars

Police working for University Hospitals Health System (UH) in Cleveland, Ohio, soon will be able to make misdemeanor arrests, enforce traffic laws and ticket illegally parked cars on city streets adjacent to the hospital's campus, according to an article on the Cleveland.com website.

Cleveland City Council's Public Safety Committee granted Cleveland Police authorization to forge a memorandum of understanding with UH, governing how the two police agencies would interact under the UH officers' expanded powers, the article said.

Cleveland Safety Director Michael McGrath told council members that under the agreement, UH's 20 officers would follow Cleveland's general police orders for making arrests and handling disturbances on public property.

The city has similar agreements with police departments at Case Western Reserve University, the Cleveland Clinic, MetroHealth Medical Center and the Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority.
