Hospital uses steam to boost food choices, reduce waste

'Steamplicity' technology uses a pressure valve, which produces steam-cooked meals

The Sault Area Hospital is Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, has introduced a stem system for meal preparation and delivery it hopes will leave patients both happy and nourished, according to an article on The Sault Star website

'Steamplicity' uses a pressure valve, which produces steam-cooked meals in minutes, made possible with microwave energy and a steam valve system, such as a pressure cooker.

This system offers a selection of 12 to 16 entree items from which to choose daily; all special diets are addressed. Officials said the number of choices offered results in less food being tossed in the trash.

Although implementing Steamplicity required constructing pantries/kitchenettes and minimal upgrades for the main kitchen assembly area, the hospital anticipates increased patient satisfaction, reduced operating costs and less waste.
