Hospitals Prepare For Hurricane Season During Pandemic

COVID-19 has many hospitals planning to shelter in place

South Carolina hospitals have new evacuation plans to prepare for the 2020 hurricane season, according to an article on the News 13 website.

Usually hospitals would evacuate inland during a hurricane, but COVID-19 has many hospitals planning to shelter in place.

Testing requirements, the need for mask-wearing and social distancing would make evacuation difficult.

According to an article on the NOLA.com website, some  hospitals are stocking up on personal protective equipment and other supplies. Others are changing how they’ll manage non-essential staff and patients’ families. Evacuations, if needed,  will likely happen earlier to give more time for additional patients and precautions.

South Carolina hospitals are required to follow any mandates from the governor, but can request exemptions when there is a mandatory medical evacuation.
