Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, Calif., recently held an active shooter drill designed to maximize survival in emergency situations, according to an article on the Becker's Hospital Review website.

Lessons include:

• Drills take extensive planning

• Command and control of hospital operations, staff and patients during escalation of events must be established

• Immediately following the conclusion of the drill, all participants should be debriefed

• Real life catastrophes often come without warning, unlike a planned simulation
