Today's designs for behavioral healthcare facilities have become an part of the treatment process, according to an article on the Health Facilities Management website.

The psychiatric medical unit at Mercy Health Saint Mary’s, Grand Rapids, Mich., brings in sunlight and creates a variety of open common spaces.

The open plan keeps staff and patients visible to one another. Instead of a central nurse station, there are built-in benches throughout the unit. 

Safety was a central concern in the design and material selection. An aquarium, for example, is housed behind a protective layer of polycarbonate.
