JE Dunn Construction Opens Medical Building at Lackland Air Force Base

JE Dunn Construction and Leawood, Kan., based Hoefer Wysocki Architecture have partnered in an integrated, design-build, initial outfitting (iDBIO) approach to service the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on a Multiple Award Task Order Contract to design and construct medical clinics throughout the United States. As a part of the contract, the team recently opened the 79,000-square-foot Reid Health Services Center at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. This will be the team’s fifth project at Lackland Air Force Base and 20th clinic in the program.

JE Dunn and Hoefer Wysocki have designed and constructed over $800 million in healthcare facilities at more than 10 military bases across the nation to support the U.S. Air Force Healthcare Facilities Modernization Program during the past decade. This program allows the team to compete for the design and construction of healthcare facilities across the country at active military bases against a select pool of qualified teams. The U.S. Air Force Health Care Modernization Program is administered by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The new two-story clinic will include 19 departments housed in one building and will serve 86,000 trainees annually. The new replacement clinic provides clinical labs, pharmacy, public health, flight medicine, optometry, trainee health surveillance, and behavioral analysis for the 559th Medical Group.

“Working consistently with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Medical Facilities Group has allowed us to collectively improve the program and help the government achieve their goal of providing world-class health care to our deserving service men, veterans, and their families.” says JE Dunn Project Executive Craig Stearns.  “We are grateful to continue building our federal healthcare portfolio in the South Central region alongside our long-standing partner, Hoefer Wysocki.”

Hoefer Wysocki started the design in September 2015 followed by construction in September 2016. The project included more than $8 million in local subcontracts.  In addition to construction, JE Dunn and Hoefer Wysocki also performed design and install of all medical equipment, furnishings, and furniture, providing move services into the new facility. Construction will wrap up this fall with the completion of a new parking lot at the demolition site of the old facility.
