John Oliver report alleges DaVita infection control issues

DaVita called dialysis factory where infection control procedures are skipped and patients are rushed on and off machines, sometimes before the process is complete

On a recent episode of John Oliver's "Last Week Tonight," the main segment focused on infection control and other issues at DaVita Inc., the country's largest for-profit kidney-dialysis company, according to an article on the Business Insider website.

The report said infection control procedures are sometimes skipped and patients are rushed on and off machines, sometimes before the process is complete

"It was all about numbers," said one former employee. "You want to get them in, get their dialysis done, and get the next patient on."

California is attempting to pass legislation to strengthen oversight of dialysis centers like DaVita, which currently need to be inspected only every six years, while hospitals must be inspected every two and nursing homes annually.
