The Center for Connected Care at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., is investing $1 million to expand partnership with the Mayo Clinic practice, according to an article on the Healthcare IT News website.
The system includes real-time video telemedicine, secure-portal messaging, e-consults and remote patient monitoring.
Telemedicine can also help rural communities with access to care. For example, telemedicine can connect a rural provider to a distant specialist.There is a dearth of specialists in areas other than heavily populated urban centers. Moreover, a recent study demonstrated improved efficacy and lower mortality when using telehealth services as compared with traditional care.
Telehealth can build collaborative relationships for large and small health systems, enabling large facilities to reduce crowding while enabling smaller facilities to retain their patients and improve care through shared knowledge, according to a blog by Dr. Jonathan Wiesen, M.D., the founder and Chief Medical Officer of MediOrbis.
Video telemedicine is also used to offer follow-up care at a distance.
