Mayo Clinic food service fight has boosted SEIU membership, according to an article on the Post-Bulletin website. Food service workers at Charter House recently voted to unionize by a 2-to-1 ratio.
Charter House is a not-for-profit retirement community owned and operated by Mayo Clinic. It's located adjacent to Mayo's Rochester campus.
Last fall, 80 non-union food service workers at Mayo voted to join SEIU, which had represented about 350 employees in Rochester.
The two affirmative votes means SEIU's numbers in Rochester have increased by about 33 percent since Mayo announced June 2016 that it would be outsourcing its food service department in response to an internal study that found patient satisfaction scores were under 50 percent.
