A Jamesville, N.Y., nursing home is not allowing residents to drink tap water after testing showed a low level of bacteria in the facility's water system that can cause Legionnaires' disease, according to an article on the Syracuse.com website.
The facility said the state health department did not recommend water restrictions, but it imposed them anyway for the safety of residents and staff.
Residents also cannot drink from juice machines, use ice from ice machines or take tub baths. They must use showers outfitted with special filters.
The CDC said inadequate disinfectant levels, human error and equipment breakdowns often lead to building-associated outbreaks of Legionnaires'.
