New and Current Trends in Healthcare Facility Roofing

Roofing manufacturers discuss new trends in healthcare facility roofing, like green roofs.

By Jeff Wardon, Jr., Assistant Editor

Roofing is a vital part of any facility. As such, the discussions surrounding how to make roofing better are always happening. Being aware of these trends will help facility managers keep their roofing modern and functional. As an example, there is the growing trend of green roofs. In this manufacturer roundtable, Healthcare Facilities Today speaks with leading roofing manufacturers about the latest trends in roofing with an added focus on green roofs.

What are some new roofing products used in healthcare facilities or new roofing trends for healthcare facilities?

“New construction is seeing a lot of white TPO, single-ply system. Existing facilities are moving towards spray polyurethane foam roofing systems and high-performance roof coatings.”

— Steve McGuinness, regional sales manager, Energy-Seal Coatings

“The use of self-adhered membranes on re-roof applications is growing in popularity due to the ease of installation and the elimination of adhesive odors. Self-adhered materials offer excellent quality with minimal disruption and an overall reduction in labor costs.”

— Amy Aubuchon, national accounts manager, Sika Roofing

Can green roofs benefit the healing process at hospitals or improve tenant experience in senior care facilities?

“Green roof systems can help reduce the heat load on the roof which will help reduce costs associated with air-conditioning. If the roof can be seen from a patient room, a green roof may offer a more calming effect, which in turn may reduce stress and help in patient healing.”

— Steve McGuinness, regional sales manager, Energy-Seal Coatings

“There are many benefits to green roofs in healthcare. Exposure to outdoor ‘green areas’ are beneficial to a patient’s mental health and overall wellbeing especially in children and senior care facilities.  Depending on the system, hospitals can add gardens, walking paths and sometimes even playgrounds.”

— Amy Aubuchon, national accounts manager, Sika Roofing
