North Carolina hospital launches 'Dinner-to-Go' program for employees, community

Transylvania Regional Hospital aims for great food not great hospital food, with emphasis on nutrition, local sourcing

For James Hargis, the new director of food and nutrition services at Transylvania Regional Hospital in Brevard, N.C., "it's all about the food," according to an article in the Transylvania Times.

"We strive to make TRH known for great food, not just great hospital food," Hargis said in the article. "We use locally grown foods when possible to build awareness of the great local food offerings available in our community and across western North Carolina."

Hargis has a "Dinner-to-Go" program for hospital employees and members of the community. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, dinner-to-go can be ordered at lunchtime (by phone or in person). Meals are ready for pick-up between 5 and 6 p.m. that evening. Dinners are portioned for two and cost $5/person ($4.50 for hospital employees). The department hopes to expand this program to five days a week.

The hospital's dietary department is the largest local provider of off-site catering," Hargis said in the article.
