A recent government report said the tornado that destroyed a Missouri nursing home three years ago showed that long-term care facilities need to have specially designed shelters, according to a report on the McKnight's website.
Of 95 occupants, 19 died when the Greenbriar Nursing Home was leveled by the tornado that hit Joplin, Mo., in 2011.
Tornado shelters should be installed both in new and existing nursing homes and similar buildings in tornado hazard zones, the National Institute of Standards and Technology recommended.
