Guelph General Hospital in Ontario has implemented a new security program that roughly doubles the number of active security guards and targets potentiallly volatile areas, according to an article on the Guelph Mercury website.
Four permanent security officers have been installed as part of the new program. Another two guards are on-site and available when additional security is needed.
The new program includes the installation of an around-the-clock security officer in the emergency department's clinical area. A security officer is also stationed around-the-clock in the emergency waiting room, and another is assigned to do rounds throughout the hospital, stationed in the emergency waiting room between rounds. The fourth is assigned to patient protection and observation functions.
The new program was a result of a security audit done in the emergency department.
