Probe of dirty surgical tools at Detroit healthcare system reopened

Federal health authorities are again investigating dirty tools at the Detroit Medical Center

Federal health authorities are again investigating dirty tools at the Detroit Medical Center, according to an article on the The Detroit News website.

The inspection was conducted by inspectors for the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs and Joint Commission on behalf of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

The inspections at Children’s Hospital of Michigan, Harper University Hospital, Detroit Receiving Hospital and the Karmanos Cancer Center follow an incident in which another operation was interrupted by an extremely soiled instrument one day after state regulators ended their investigation of the system.

Under federal rules, the CMS can sever funding to hospitals but not fine them, the article said.
