Puerto Rico Lacks Hospital To Survive COVID-19

Puerto Rico has a surge in COVID-19 infections

Vieques, Puerto Rico,  still doesn't have a functioning hospital almost three years after Hurricane Maria, according to an article on the NBC News website.

At the end of July, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases jumped by more than 1,500.  There were nearly 4,800 confirmed coronavirus cases on July 24.

FEMA has allocated $39.5 million to help Vieques rebuild its only hospital, which was destroyed by Maria.

The hospital has not been rebuilt yet, even though the funds were approved in January. A$4 million temporary hospital is still operating in Vieques.

Puerto Rican leaders say the delay to the Vieques hospital and thousands of other stalled projects is a reflection of unequal treatment from the federal government, according to an article on The New York Times website.
