Study: Hospital workers can unknowingly spread the flu

Infection control measures in hospitals may be inadequate


Current flu infection control measures in hospitals may be inadequate, according to an article on the U.S. News and World Report website.

A new study has found that hospital workers and patients can spread the flu before they show any symptoms.

During the flu seasons studied, 11 percent of the healthcare workers and 4 percent of the patients were diagnosed with a flu infection. Two of the staff and two of the patients had no flu symptoms.

Seventeen percent of the flu-positive swabs collected from healthcare workers and eight percent of 38 flu-positive swabs from patients were obtained on days when they had no flu symptoms.
