Two fired from N.J. facility that may have exposed thousands to HIV, hepatitis

A Saddle Brook surgery center was closed after state surveyors found an outdated infection control plan and unacceptable sterilization practices

Two employees of the HealthPlus Surgery Center in Saddle Brook, N.J., were fired and another resigned after the facility was closed after state surveyors found an outdated infection control plan and unacceptable sterilization practices, according to an article on the WKYC website.

Nearly 3,800 former patients may have been exposed to hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV.

The center reopened seven days after submitting a corrective plan to the state.

A pair of workers responsible for the cleaning and disinfecting of medical instruments used in surgery were let go for "performance-related issues."  The center's nursing director resigned Sept. 6 — one day before the Health Department closed HealthPlus.
