Understanding matting terminology

Fremont- OH - There are a number of terms associated with anti-fatigue and safety matting systems.

For those facility managers and cleaning professionals involved with selecting an anti-fatigue or safety mat, the following technical glossary provided by Crown Matting Technologiesshould help you understand "matting-lingo" and make a more thought-based matting selection:

Grit-Safe: A granule material that adds extra traction to matting, helping to prevent slips and falls.

Nitrile: A chemical compound added to some mats to reduce the absorption of oils into standard rubber. This helps prevent mats from swelling or becoming slippery.

Non-conductive: This type of matting protects standing workers from electrical shock when using high-voltage equipment.

Durometer: A measure of the softness or hardness of a mats firmness. The higher the number, the firmer the mat.

Resilience: This is actually a very important consideration when selecting anti-fatigue matting. It refers to the mat's "bounce," which helps reduce worker fatigue and protect health. A resilience rating of 25 or more provides a significant increase in worker comfort.

Resistivity: Refers to how effectively a matting material opposes the flow of electrical current; if this is a consideration, select mats with a high resistivity.

Wear bond or wear bonded: Not available from all manufacturers, wear bonded mats are a new type of anti-fatigue matting technology. Wear bonded mats are designed to be more durable and provide more comfort than conventional anti-fatigue mats.

Zedlan: A specially patented foam that has improved the resilience and durability of anti-fatigue matting

"The importance of an effective matting system should never be undervalued," says Adam Strizzi, marketing manager for Crown Matting Technologies. "Once managers realize their benefits, they realize how important entry matting systems are to the health and safety of building users year-round."
