Worker blames 'filthy' conditions for outbreak at N.J. facility

A worker at the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation also points to widespread mismanagement

A worker at the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Haskell, N.J., has blamed "filthy" conditions and mismanagement for the adenovirus outbreak that has killed 10 children and infected at least 17 others, according to an article on the NJ.com website.

The worker said the conditions at the facility have contributed to the outbreak and described dirty rooms, old and rusty equipment, mold, poor upkeep and managers apparently indifferent to concerns raised by staff for years, the article said.

The state Department of Health is investigating the outbreak.

The worker blamed the problems at the facility on management that took over about four years ago. Since then, the worker said, the focus has been on cutting costs and reducing staff wherever possible.
