Healthcare IoT comes with ethical considerations

Healthcare IoT devices generate volumes of data about the health and lifestyle of users

A recent paper examines some of the ethical considerations that come from the growth of healthcare IoT begins. According to an article on The Huffington Post website, the paper focuses on the ethics of devices, data and practices.

Information recorded on devices can be captured and analyzed by third parties which runs the risk of violating expectation of privacy.

Healthcare IoT devices generate volumes of data about the health and lifestyle of users which brings up obvious issues around the security.

Finally, IOT use might impact the delivery of healthcare by giving users more power over their own care, which could inadvertently isolate them. Studies have found that elderly people are especially concerned about this possibility, the article said.

The use of IoT technologies in healthcare needs to be implemented thoughtfully to ensure these pitfalls are avoided. The paper offers strategies to help.
