Several challenges expected to shape healthcare IT in 2018

Three areas of uncertainty will have implications for the information systems


Healthcare experienced three areas of uncertainty in 2017 and those challenges will have implications for the information systems that healthcare organizations are using in 2018, according to an article on the Health Data Management website.

Providers will need to build systems that are flexible to keep up with shifting realities, the article said.

Data breaches will remain a key challenge. In 2017, the pace of attacks equaled more than a breach per day.

The transition to value-based care also challenged the healthcare industry. Moving from a system based upon volume to value requires a major realignment of systems, objectives and goals. Consolidation was the third major issue in 2017. It sparked suggestions that the accumulation of small deals that could fly under the antitrust radar and result in market-dominant groups that should be subject to oversight.
