Disinfection deficiencies found at Colorado healthcare facility

Report says Memorial Hospital employees improperly cleaned devices, surgical instruments and procedure rooms

A report says employees at Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colo., improperly cleaned devices, surgical instruments and procedure rooms, according to an article on the Colorado Springs Gazette website.

The safety violations, which were discovered in April and May, prompted hospital officials to initiate changes to the hospital's disinfection practices.

Most often, employees failed to follow manufacturers' instruction manuals for cleaning certain devices, such as vaginal ultrasound transducers.

One employee acknowledged improperly cleaning the ultrasound device for four years.
