Faulty CCTV system prevents hospital assault probe

Internal security system at Galway University Hospital problematic despite large investment

An assault on a female patient at one of Ireland’s biggest hospitals could not be fully investigated because of recurring faults with the hospital’s CCTV system, according to an article on the Irish Mirror website.

Despite a large investment in security services over the past three years at Galway University Hospital, there are still problems with its surveillance equipment.

On March 18, a female patient reported that she had been assaulted by a man on the grounds of the hospital.

The security report noted that the appropriate investigation could not be followed up because “the whole CCTV system” was not working.

On September 26 last year, security staff again reported that the internal CCTV system was not working and pointed out that it was not possible to monitor the grounds of the hospital.

They also reported that 25 street lights on the hospital grounds were broken, and an electronic system on an access door to the physiotherapy department was out of order.
