Healthcare facility succession planning can prevent future pain

Hospitals across the country are facing longterm facility department staffing issues

Hospitals across the country are facing longterm facility department staffing issues, but most are not yet taking steps to avoid future problems, according to an article on the Health Facility Maintenance website.

Many have yet to embrace the concept of succession planning to fill key vacancies. In a recent survey, 44 percent of healthcare facility professionals surveyed said they had no succession plan in place.

“Many are taking a ‘we’ll deal with it when we get there’ approach, which is a mistake — kind of like buying a lottery ticket is not a good retirement plan,” Tim Adams, director of member professional development, ASHE, said in the article.

“We are going to have a huge vacuum pretty quickly, not only in facilities management positions, but in skilled trades across the board in healthcare,” he said.
